Changing Your Own Oil

Changing your own oil can be a very economical. An oil change usually costs around $30,  so after you buy the materials that you can use over and over again, the money you save starts to add up. The basic materials that you will need is an oil funnel, a wrench, and a tray to drain out the old oil. You may also need a jack to lift up your car if it is too low to the ground.

Start by unscrewing the drain plug, and letting all the old oil drain into the pan (make sure you put the pan under the car befor you start, or you will be cleaning up oil for the rest of the day!). Once the oil stops comming out, replace the plug. Make sure that you puy the old oil in a sealed container and dispose of it correctly.

Next, open the hood of your can and find the oil filter. Carefully using an oil filter wrench, unscrew the old oil filter until it is loose. Before putting in the new filter, make sure you put a bit of oil on your finger and rub it on the top of the new oil filter to lube it.  Fill the filter just over half way with oil. Then, screw on the new oil filter with your hand, not with the wrench. Over tightening can cause leaks.

Then come the last step, refilling the engine oil. Unscrew the oil fill cap and put the funnel in it. Make sure that you know how much oil your engine holds. Pour just under that amount into the funnel. Then, check your oil level and add any more oil if needed.
